If you’re hosting the holiday party this year, you might wonder what type of beverage to serve. Traveling to the South this time of year, you’d likely encounter the sweet and spicy beverage known as “Russian Tea”—a soothing mix of hot black tea, warm Wassail spices, and bright citrus flavor. Invented in the 1960’s, the recipe is traditionally made with instant tea and powered orange mix. Here, we give that classic recipe a refreshingly honest upgrade by replacing the instant ingredients with real-brewed Lori’s Lemon Tea, fresh orange juice, and whole spices.
Brew up a batch right before company arrives and your house will be filled with the welcoming scents of fresh cinnamon and clove. All you need are a few chairs placed around a roaring fire, a steamy cup for each guest, and you’ll have a holiday treat that simply can’t be beat.
What are your favorite non-alcoholic holiday drinks?
4 cups Lori’s Lemon Honest Tea
2 cups fresh orange juice
10 whole cloves
2 cinnamon sticks
2 Tablespoons brown sugar
Pinch ground nutmeg (optional)
In a large pan over medium-high heat, combine Lori’s Lemon Honest Tea, orange juice, clove, cinnamon, and nutmeg (if desired). Heat liquid until simmering. Reduce heat to low and stir in brown sugar, whisking until dissolved. Turn off heat and cover pot for 5 minutes to allow spices to infuse. Remove whole spices and re-warm until steaming. Serve.
