Honest Tea Hits $1M Milestone In Fair Trade Premium Contributions


Mission Report Highlights Outline Growing Impact of Brand’s Fair Trade and Organic Sourcing

(Bethesda, MD)—APRIL 26, 2017—Honest Tea, Inc. the nation’s top-selling organic bottled tea company, released highlights from its seventh annual Mission Report, which detail the brand’s impact from May 2015-May 2016. Honest Tea has cumulatively contributed $1 million in Fair Trade premiums, a landmark milestone of the brand’s contributions that ultimately finance community development initiatives in Honest Tea’s sourcing communities.

The brand hit another milestone in 2015 when it completed the transition of its organic sugar supply to organic and Fair Trade Certified™, increasing the brand’s yearly 2015 contribution from Fair Trade premiums to over $200 thousand, four times what it was in 2010. Honest Tea launched the first-ever bottled tea made with Fair Trade Certified tea leaves in 2003 and later converted all of its organic tea leaf varieties to Fair Trade Certified in 2011.

Honest Tea pays a premium for each of its beverages that contain one or more Fair Trade Certified ingredients, and a portion of that payment goes to the community from which the product was sourced. A counsel of community-elected workers proposes development initiatives to be funded by the premiums, and then the community votes on which initiative should be prioritized.  Over the years, Honest Tea’s premiums have contributed to the improvement of local schools, funding of worker health initiatives, and the purchasing of mechanized farm equipment and modern essentials for workers such as cooking stoves and bicycles.

“Our transition to organic, Fair Trade Certified sugar across our entire product portfolio is our biggest step forward on Fair Trade since we converted all of our tea leaves to Fair Trade Certified,” said Honest Tea co-founder and TeaEO Emeritus, Seth Goldman. “This change, made possible in part by a cost-saving change in our PET bottle design, was a big step forward for Honest Tea’s commitment to Fair Trade and was a win-win for our brand, our consumers, and the farming communities that produce Fair Trade sugar.”

Other highlights from Honest Tea’s seventh annual Mission Report include:

  • Honest Tea’s 2015 VisionSpring project to bring eye care screenings to 3,885 community members of the West Jalinga Tea Estate in Assam, India.
  • The increase of Honest Tea’s efforts to democratize organics through expanded distribution via
    • The pilot launch of three Honest Tea varieties in Munich, Germany
    • The debut of Honest products at Wendy’s® and Chick-fil-A® locations nationwide
