How Just A Tad Sweet It Is: Honest Tea Converts All Organic Sugar To Fair Trade Certified Organic Sugar

Tea Company Completes Conversion to Organic Sugar from Fair Trade Farming Communities

(Bethesda, MD)— February 24, 2016—Honest Tea, makers of the nation’s top selling ready-to-drink organic bottled tea, is transitioning the organic cane sugar across all of its products to organic, Fair Trade Certified™ cane sugar, the company announced today.

“We’ve been on the journey toward organic, Fair Trade Certified™ sugar for a long time,” said Ami Mathur, Honest Tea’s Brand Director. “Today marks the culmination of our efforts to develop both the supply chain and the scale to be able to incorporate the additional costs of organic, Fair Trade Certified™ sugar.”

This transition to organic, Fair Trade Certified™ sugar marks another step on Honest Tea’s journey to produce premium organic and Fair Trade beverages. In 2011, Honest Tea transitioned all of its organic tea leaves to Fair Trade Certified™ and has been gradually incorporating organic, Fair Trade sugar across many of its product lines since 2014.  The Fair Trade premiums from Honest Tea’s organic cane sugar will be reinvested in community healthcare services, farming equipment, and schools as designated by the company’s current sourcing community partners in Paraguay.

“We’ve contributed almost one million dollars in premiums to tea and sugar farmers since we began sourcing Fair Trade Certified™ ingredients in 2003,” said Honest Tea Co-Founder and TeaEO Emeritus Seth Goldman. “Our partnership with The Coca-Cola Company has allowed us to grow our Fair Trade sourcing in a way we never would have thought possible just a few years ago.”

The final beverages to switch to Fair Trade, organic sugar include Honest Tea’s line of 16.9 fl. oz. bottled teas in PET bottles and those same varieties sold in multi-serve 59 fl. oz. bottles. These varieties are sold nationwide in grocery and convenience stores in 16.9 fl. oz. bottles and in select grocery store locations in multi-serve 59 fl. oz. bottles.  The labels for these varieties will be updated with a Fair Trade USA logo that indicates the switch to Fair Trade Certified™ sugar; the labels with the updated logo will being rolling out in the coming weeks.

Honest Tea has worked closely with Fair Trade USA to develop the supply chain to make this change possible, after committing to expanding its sourcing of organic, Fair Trade Certified™ sugar in its 2015 Mission Report. It has partnered with Fair Trade USA since 2003, with the launch of Peach Oo-La-Long, the first bottled tea to use Fair Trade Certified™ tea leaves.

“Honest Tea has been a true leader in helping grow and expand Fair Trade certification for many years,” said Paul Rice, President and CEO of Fair Trade USA. “We are proud and honored to continue collaborating with them as we work to drive more impact for more people.”
